일요일 저녁을 산뜻이 갖다바쳐 제가 가장 좋아하는 에피소드인 71편 (Enlightenment 14편)을 번역해 보았습니다. 물론 곰님은 진짜로 번역문 조공을 받게 되리라곤 상상하지 못하셨겠죠... 후후후.

She waited for a while, but gentle feeling she anticipated never came onto her lips. Only the chilly wind was blowing and passing by Ionia, cooling down her burning heart gradually.
When she had closed her eyes and lifted her chin, she was too nervous to hear any sound; now she could hear even the sound of gentle breeze touching bushes.
"H-hum."
Ionia opened her eyes slowly, hearing the sound of dry cough. Her hands and shoulders were not trembling anymore.
Aubrey was looking at different direction, covering his mouth with clutched hand. He was blushing, not because of cold weather.
Disappointing.
It was so disappointing, but Ionia could smile. This situation, expression on his face, everything was very much like himself. Of course, she had no intention to grant him a word of relief that easily.
Ionia crossed her arms and turned her back on him. Aubrey looked more embarrassed than ever before.
"Don't you think it's too mean? I thought I can expect at least that much of return."
Aubrey did not notice, but Ionia's expression was not exactly that of someone who was genuinely annoyed. She was bluffing to hide her ashamed feeling.
"When I was writing 'Mathematical Principles of Natural Phenomenon', I went through hard time to deal with several problems. But now I came to think of it, those were not even a problem compared with what THOU... no, YOU are now asking for."
Well said. Obviously, Aubrey did not suit for kissing. He was insensitive as stone and wood.
Should not have expected such token in the first place.
As her reason restored hegemony over emotion once more, Ionia realized she tried a very radical attempt. It is this place and atmosphere which are to blame.

"I don't want your apology, either." said Ionia in stinging tone, pouting her lips. She wanted to check Aubrey's expression, but decided to suppress the urge.
Meanwhile, Aubrey looked so perplexed that it was pity for Ionia not to witness his face. By the time he understood her feelings only abstractly; now it struck his heart so vividly and directly. She was not asking for return; she was showing her affection with her action.
Aubrey sighed gently, taking her silhouette from behind.
He had thought her only as a lovely younger sister. They both had no sibling. Mistaken? No, it was more close to vague aspiration. They were said to be well matched. They were told they would make lovely couple when they are grown up. Still, Aubrey treated Ionia as a precious sister.
That is the reason why portrait of Ionia in his pocket watch had been remained in youth. His feeling toward her had never been changed, surrounded by solid shell.
At this moment, however, -when Ionia closed her eyes and lifted her chin- a crack had appeared on that egg shell. Partly because he realized her emotion clearly at the end, but more fundamentally, it was her very appearance which struck his heart with inexplicable beauty.
Silence prolonged. Ionia was still turning her back on him, but wanting to break the silence. Nothing appropriate had occurred to her mind.
Aubrey spoke first.
"Mistaken, or something. Hard to explain my feelings."
Unlike usual himself, Aubrey sounded confused and uncertain. Ionia concentrated on his words more avidly.
"Actually, I had regarded you only as a pretty younger sister."
Ionia's eyes widened. Suddenly she turned to face him"
"What did you say?"
"Well, I was explaining how I had thought of..."
Ionia shook her head vigorously, cutting his words in the middle.
"No, before that."
"Before that? Hum..."
Aubrey pondered with his chin resting on his hand. Nothing special had said in his memory. Mistaken, hard to explain my feelings...? But Ionia did not react to that part.
Suddenly one specific word came across his mind. Aubrey uttered that in doubt.
"You mean, a pretty younger sister?"
Correct. Ionia came one step nearer, nodding expectantly.
"Do you, do you really think I am pretty?"
Aubrey did not understand the intention of that question, but he nodded tentatively.
"Yes, because it is true."
"How much?"
"How much? Now you are mistaken. Human beauty cannot be measured in quantitative..."
Aubrey halted abruptly. Thick vapor came out of Ionia's lips as she sighed heavily. Her expression going cold, Aubrey returned to the beginning point.
"I have never met anyone more beautiful than you."
"More than princess Midmaelen?"
Aubrey nodded.
"More than lady Devianne?"
Nodding again.
"More than Cloe?"
Aubrey nodded assuringly.
Ionia's face brightened. She knew Aubrey valued what was inside in a human- still, she felt satisfied. Her lips were curved with gentle smile.
Return was good enough. But Ionia asked once more confidently.
"Shall we further on to the next part? You only regarded me as a sister, and than?"
Aubrey raised his eyes to the sky. Cloud was thickening. It will shade the moon light soon.
"We'd better talk whilst climbing down the hill."
Ionia looked up and agreed. It will be snowing, soon. Color of the sky forecasted.
Three hours later, Aubrey and Ionia arrived at Alasa castle. To their surprise, officer Gaul and secretary Rua were standing in front of outer gate, covered with snow and trembling head to foot.
They found the lord and the undersecretary to the lord, and dashing toward them with eagerness. Aubrey greeted them quizzically.
"What art thou doing here?"
Gaul approached him, brushing out snow from his head.
"Oh, my lord! Good gracious! It was snowing hard and you were later than I thought, so I started to worry about you, my lord."
Aubrey took out his pocket watch and checked the time. One hour to mid-night. Their concern was totally understandable.
"Descending took more time than I had anticipated due to the weather. I am afraid I gave thee unnecessary concerns."
"No, my lord. It is just as well that you returned safely."
Gaul added that Oscar wished to have an audience with the lord. The lad might have decided his mind about the school matter. Aubrey notified Gaul his understanding, and turned to Ionia.
Rua was pleading to Ionia at the moment.
"Soldiers were about to start searching for you, sis. I said it would be risky, didn't I? Really..."
Ionia grinned and brushed dust of snow from Rua's hair. It was not a special occasion, but Rua showed shade of tears by this small affectionate touch.
"Miss Louvremann." called Aubrey.
Ionia turned her head. Their eyes met, and strange chemistry flowed between them.
Slow-witted Gaul did not notice; sensitive Rua, on the other hand, felt that strange flow of air for sure. She stared at the lord and the undersecretary each in turns, with dazed expression on her face.
"Be careful not to catch a cold. Take a rest."
"Don't worry about me; after you, my lord."
Ionia‘s expression was set, but her voice was gentle.
Aubrey entered inside the castle with Gaul. After his appearance disappeared for sure, Rua started to interrogate Ionia in ringing tone.
Aubrey returned to his private chamber at once. He would find himself aching all over his body next morning unless he lay on the bed immediately. Climbing down the mountain would have been even more challenging if he did not look up to the sky in time. It could have been worse.
When he returned, chamber maids were preparing hot bath for the lord. They assisted him as he took off his garments. At that moment,
Bang!
The door flung open forcefully. Maids were halted with astonishment; Rude enough to be executed without any excuse.
"Aubrey!"
The culprit was Monella, who was 'dwelling' in underground jail cell. He gasped and panted as the aftermath of his dead run. Aubrey waved his hand; maids drew themselves back immediately.
"Oh, my! You were here!"
"I returned right before."
Monella bent his body and calmed his breath in relief. Aubrey stared at him and asked calmly.
"Is she awakened?"
Monella stood up right away. As if he witnessed a legendary race, elf, his eyes widened in astonishment.
"How did you know?"
Aubrey laughed. He answered as he buttoned up his shirt again.
"Devianne said that while ago. She said, she wished to capture snowy landscape of Alasa onto her canvas."
Aubrey gave a look toward the outside. Monella's eyes followed his. Undoubtedly, the world had turned white.
Of course, Monella did not buy the tale that she was awakened by snow. The only important fact is that Aubrey trusted his friend until the very end, and that faith had never been severed.
Monella suddenly recalled his desperate past. He sighed, in the mixture of relief, pleasure and introspection.
"Dear me, until when would you treat me like an idiot?"
Aubrey merely smiled.
